The participants in the ballgame required excellent physical condition and they had to protect their forearms, knees, hips and head in order to hit the ball and make it pass through a hoop that was located on the high part of stonewalls. These protective pads were very important because the ball they used to play the game was made out of a very hard gum extracted from the rubber tree. This activity was a ritual, and for that reason the Mayas placed images of the deities related to the ballgame on the superior part of the parallel structures.
