Cañón del río Usumacinta is located in Tenosique, on Tabasco's border with Chiapas and Guatemala. It was declared a Federal Protected Natural Area in 2005. It has a total area of 45,954 hectares.

The Usumacinta River runs sandwiched between 200 meter tall canyon walls. The area around the canyon has lush evergreen forest, with a variety of trees such as the sapote, sapodilla, ramon, canshan, among others and fauna include the agouti, howler monkey, jaguar, snake and parrot. There are caves along the walls that attest to the fact that the area was inhabited by the Mayans for centuries.
