The Bonampak archaeological site has a huge forest area that is home to the representative rainforests of southeastern Mexico. It is part of one of the most important forest areas in the country. The communities living around Bonampak have remained in direct contact with their surrounding nature, allowing them to keep their important links to ritual, religious and traditional aspects. The Lacandon people have preserved their ancestors´ vast traditional knowledge on regional flora and fauna, as well as their different forms of management and use.
One of the unique features of Bonampak is its three ancient buildings that are painted from floor to ceiling with exceptional techniques, which are highly expressive, dynamic and rich in colors. Bonampak is one of the most important lapidary centers and it is part of an eco-archaeological center that is of great importance in the Mayan World.
